As reported in the Environmental Health Trust's latest newsletter, cell phones have now been linked to erectile dysfunction (ED). While numerous studies have shown that cell phone radiation leads to human sperm death and damage and decreased fertility, the new report of increased erectile dysfunction is sending shock waves through the men's health community.

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to attain or maintain a penile erection sufficient for successful sexual intercourse and is a very common clinical condition that can affect up to 50% of men over 40 years old. Among the known risk factors for ED are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity and hypercholesterolemia.

In the preliminary study published last year in the Central European Journal of Urology, medical teams in Austria and Egypt found that men who carried switched-on cell phones for longer periods of time had a notably greater incidence of ED than men who carried switched-on phones for lesser periods of time.

For the study, the researchers recruited 20 consecutive men complaining of erectile dysfunction (ED) for at least six months (Group A), and another group of 10 healthy men with no complaints of ED (Group B). According to the researchers, there was no significant difference between either group regarding age, weight, height, smoking, total testosterone or exposure to other known sources of radiation. All men completed the German version of the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) for evaluation of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), as well as another questionnaire designed by the study clinicians that assessed cell phone usage habits. The men in the study who had erectile dysfunction carried switched-on cell phones for an average of 4.4 hours daily, whereas the men without erectile dysfunction averaged 1.8 hours.  Since the preliminary study was small-scale, the researchers concluded that the results indicated a need for larger-scaled studies. However, if past history is an indicator, the cell phone industry can be expected to vigorously contest any negative conclusions and endeavor to produce results favorable to the industry.

When It Comes To Cell Phones, Distance Is Your Friend

Cell phones have also been linked to cancers -- especially brain cancers and cancers in the area adjacent to where cell phones are normally carried. A good rule of thumb when it comes to cell phones: Distance is your friend. In other words, the farther you keep a cell phone from your body, both when carrying it and when talking on it, the better. Likewise, do not keep a cell phone turned on and close by when sleeping.

Do Cell Phones Cause Brain Tumors?   

You are likely one of the 3 billion people in the world who owns and uses a cell phone. The study also showed that people who started using cell phones before the age of 20 years old were more than five times as likely to develop brain cancer. Dr. David Carpenter, a physician who has researched and published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals on the environmental causes of human disease, also testified about the scientific foundation for cautionary measures before the U.S. House Subcommittee.

The BioInitiative Report, to which Dr. Carpenter was co-editor, documents serious scientific concerns about the current limits regulating how much radiation is allowable from power lines, cell phones, and many other sources of exposure to radio frequencies and electromagnetic fields in daily life.

It concludes that the existing standards for public safety are completely inadequate to protect your health. The report also includes studies showing evidence for:

The density of children's skulls is far less than adults', and their brains are more susceptible to damage from cell phone and wireless radiation. So it's very important that you keep cell phones away from infants, babies, children and pregnant women now, as the damage may not start showing up for 10 years or more, and by then it will be too late. Dr. mercola believes that the increase in cell phone usage may be one of the primary causes of the autism epidemic.

Dr. Mercola offers some crucial tips to protect your brain and your health from cell phones:

• Children Should Never Use Cell Phones: Barring a life-threatening emergency, children should not use a cell phone, or a wireless device of any type. Children are far more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults, because of their thinner skull bones.

• Reduce Your Cell Phone Use: Turn your cell phone off more often. Reserve it for emergencies or important matters.

• Use A Land Line At Home And At Work: Although more and more people are switching to using cell phones as their exclusive phone contact, it is a dangerous trend and you can choose to opt out of the madness.

• Reduce or Eliminate Your Use of Other Wireless Devices: You would be wise to cut down your use of these devices. Just as with cell phones, it is important to ask yourself whether or not you really need to use them every single time. If you must use a portable home phone, use the older kind that operates at 900 MHz. They are no safer during calls, but at least they do not broadcast constantly even when no call is being made.

• Use Your Cell Phone Only Where Reception Is Good: The weaker the reception, the more power your phone must use to transmit, and the more power it uses, the more radiation it emits, and the deeper the dangerous radio waves penetrate into your body. Ideally, you should only use your phone with full bars and good reception.

• Turn Your Cell Phone Off When Not In Use: As long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call.

• Keep Your Cell Phone Away From Your Body When It Is On: The most dangerous place to be, in terms of radiation exposure, is within about six inches of the emitting antenna. You do not want any part of your body within that area.

• Use Safer Headset Technology: Wired headsets will certainly allow you to keep the cell phone farther away from your body. However, if a wired headset is not well-shielded, and most of them are not, the wire itself acts as an antenna attracting ambient radiation and transmitting radiation directly to your brain. Make sure the wire used to transmit the signal to your ear is shielded.

From Daily Dose with William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.  Cellphone Study Has Some Hang-Ups (8/11): That noise you're hearing isn't another bad signal from your cellphone -- it's the industry trying to drown out the research linking its devices to cancer. The latest effort: A nonsensical new study that claims no link between kids who use cellphones and the risk of brain tumors.

Researchers surveyed 352 kids and teens from Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland who were diagnosed with brain cancer and compared them to 646 kids of similar age who didn't have tumors. They say 55 percent of the cancer kids were regular cellphone users, versus 51 percent of the kids who didn't have cancer -- or not enough of a difference for a link, according to the study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

So let's give every kid a cellphone -- heck, let's glue one to every child's ear, right? No so fast... because this study is absolutely meaningless. First, it was funded by the cellphone industry -- and it just so happened to find that the phones are safe. What are the odds? Second, the kids in this study were as young as 7 -- not nearly old enough to have been using phones for the years, or even decades, it takes for a brain tumor to form. Follow these cellphone-swinging kids for another decade or so and get back to me -- on a landline, please. Third, we've got plenty of other studies that say otherwise. One found cellphones will double your tumor risk if you use them for more than a decade, while another found a shocking 500 percent increase in risk in people who start using them before the age of 20. Other studies have linked cellphones to tumors in the salivary glands, DNA damage, dementia, infertility, and even bone damage for people who keep one attached to the body all day. If you know all that and want to risk it anyway, be my guest. But for God's sake, keep these death machines away from kids.
